Opinion or Conviction

I hear opinions all the time. Some, I nod in agreement. Others, I shake my head at how ridiculous they are. The ones that concern me, however, are the opinions that have no basis in conviction.

Opinion: A personal view or attitude. A belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty. When you believe that what you think is right even though you have nothing to back it up. It’s often the popular view.

Conviction: A fixed or firm belief. When you know what God’s Word says and you stand up for what He has decreed is right. Even when others don’t. Even when it’s not popular.

Now this is where the opinionated people (myself included) start their tirade. Everyone has a right to an opinion, and all that. But let me just say something here. The right to an opinion does not make the opinion right.

If you want to hold on to your opinion, be my guest. Just make sure you are taking a stand on something that is true. Something that is right. Something that is just. Make sure there is conviction behind your opinion. And stick with it. Even if it makes you unpopular.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Philippians 4:8 (NLT)
