What do you believe?

Last weekend, my daughter and I had an opportunity to talk to a very confused and dangerous young man. Confused, because he is dabbling in a variety of pagan and mystic religions. Dangerous, because he has opened himself up to being controlled by the enemy. And he doesn’t even realize it.

Conversation with this man was difficult. It was obvious that his mind was not functioning normally and what he said made little sense. He spoke of involvement in black magic and the occult, being tortured in other realms, insisting on the need for balance between good and evil. He is a man in torment.

My heart hurt for him.

At one point, he asked my daughter, “What is God?” She responded, “God is not a what. God is a person.” The young man didn’t like the answer, claiming that she had not answered his question.  She replied, telling him that God is love, God is the Creator, God forgives and heals and saves through His Son, Jesus Christ. The man shook his head, saying we had nothing to back up that explanation. We explained that we have the Word of God. Whether that answer satisfied him or not, I don’t know. What I do know is that he doesn’t know what he believes. He is searching for truth and unfortunately, that search is taking him places where he will find nothing but pain, confusion and ultimately, death.

In the days since this encounter, I’ve been asking myself some questions. Do I know what I believe? Am I firm in what God’s Word tells me about who and what I am in Jesus Christ? Do I have the assurance of spending eternity with Him? While the answers to these questions are a resounding YES for me, they are sadly not as definite for others.

Jesus said in John 10:10, the thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. (NKJV)

Make no mistake; the enemy is a deceiver and a thief. He will steal. He will kill. And he will destroy.

Do you know what you believe?
